Working with a dietitian who specializes in kidney disease may be just what you need.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely you or someone you love has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.  Maybe it’s stage 1 or 2 and you want to learn more about what you can do to keep your kidneys as healthy as possible.  If so, you are proactive, and I admire you for your desire to take control of your health!  Maybe you’re in stage 3 or 4, and you’re starting to get concerned that you will end up on dialysis.  Or perhaps you’re in stage 5 and your doctor is telling you that dialysis is in the near future for you.

Regardless of the stage you’re in, you can benefit from the services of a registered dietitian nutritionist who specializes in kidney disease. We live in an age when many people have access to a lot of information.  But is it the right information for YOU?  Your condition is specific to you, and it may be difficult to discern what to do.

You may have read that you need to restrict potassium in your diet if you have kidney disease. But that would mean having to give up some really delicious and nutritious foods.  In reality, it may not be necessary for you to limit potassium intake. You may have heard that you should cut your sodium intake, but have you cut it too much?

You may have read conflicting information about protein, fluids, phosphorus, and calcium.  It can be hard to decipher what YOU need to do with the bits and pieces of information you pick up on the internet.

A registered dietitian nutritionist who specializes in kidney disease can determine what is right for you depending on many different factors.  She can educate you, motivate you, and give you the tools you need to succeed at maintaining your kidney function so that dialysis is NOT in your future.

If you have CKD and need help knowing what steps to take to keep your kidneys healthy, contact me.  I would love to help!

Kidney nutrition advice is often conflicting and confusing.

I’m Heather Smith, a registered dietitian with 25+ years in clinical nutrition (including 8 years working with dialysis patients). One thing I’ve learned: a lot of “kidney diet” information online was written for very specific, often late-stage clinical situations, and then applied broadly to the general topic of kidney health.

The result is widespread confusion and many people following food rules that may not align with the latest research for their specific stage.

I put together a free guide that walks through 5 common food misconceptions in chronic kidney disease management and what current research supports instead.

Topics covered:
• Potassium myths vs. what clinical markers actually show
• The role of protein at different stages
• Sodium targets that are realistic and livable
• Why phosphorus additives matter more than whole foods
• Why one-size-fits-all “kidney diets” often miss the mark
