Hibiscus Tea for CKD: Can It Support Kidney Health?

If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), you’ve probably heard all kinds of claims about herbal teas and kidney health.

Some are supposed to “cleanse” your kidneys. Others supposedly “flush out toxins.” And then there are the teas that promise to actually improve kidney function.

I’m not a fan of those claims.

Your kidneys don’t need to be “cleansed,” and there isn’t a magic tea that will reverse chronic kidney disease.

But that doesn’t mean that what you drink doesn’t matter.

One tea that I think is worth talking about is hibiscus tea.

Hibiscus tea is naturally caffeine-free, has a beautiful deep red color, and has a pleasantly tart flavor. More importantly, there is some interesting human research suggesting that hibiscus may have benefits for one of the most important factors affecting kidney health: blood pressure.

So, is hibiscus tea good for CKD?

The answer is: it may be a useful addition to a kidney-friendly diet for some people, but it is not a treatment for CKD.

Let’s take a closer look.

What is hibiscus tea?

Hibiscus tea is made from the dried calyces of the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant.

It has a naturally tart, cranberry-like flavor and is often consumed either hot or iced. You may also see it called roselle tea or sour tea.

One of the reasons hibiscus is getting attention is because it contains a variety of plant compounds, including anthocyanins and other polyphenols.

These compounds have antioxidant and other biological effects that researchers are continuing to investigate.

But here’s where I think it’s important to keep things in perspective.

Just because a plant contains antioxidants doesn’t automatically mean drinking it will improve kidney function.

What matters is what happens in human studies.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Hibiscus tea may help support healthy blood pressure

If I had to choose the most compelling reason to consider hibiscus tea for someone with CKD, this would be it.

High blood pressure is extremely common in people with CKD, and uncontrolled blood pressure can contribute to further kidney damage.

Several randomized controlled trials have investigated hibiscus and blood pressure.

A 2022 meta-analysis that combined 13 randomized controlled trials found that hibiscus consumption was associated with an average reduction in systolic blood pressure of about 6.7 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of about 4.4 mmHg compared with placebo.

That’s not insignificant.

Of course, hibiscus isn’t a substitute for blood pressure medication when medication is needed. And the studies used different amounts and preparations of hibiscus, so we can’t say that drinking one specific amount of tea will produce a particular reduction in blood pressure.

But the research does suggest that hibiscus may have a modest blood-pressure-lowering effect.

And that makes it interesting from a kidney-health perspective.

What about kidney function?

This is where I want to pump the brakes a little.

You’ll find plenty of articles online claiming that hibiscus “protects the kidneys” or “improves kidney function.”

The human evidence doesn’t allow us to make those claims.

There was a 2024 randomized controlled trial involving people with mild CKD and hypertension that looked specifically at hibiscus.

Participants received either hibiscus extract along with valsartan or valsartan along with hydrochlorothiazide for 90 days.

Both groups experienced improvements in blood pressure. The hibiscus group also had some improvements in lipid measurements.

However, the study did not demonstrate a significant improvement in kidney function compared with the control group.

That’s an important distinction.

Hibiscus may potentially support some of the factors that influence kidney health, particularly blood pressure.

But we don’t currently have good evidence that drinking hibiscus tea will increase your eGFR, repair damaged kidneys, or slow the progression of CKD.

And I think it’s important that we say that clearly.

Hibiscus is also rich in plant compounds

Hibiscus contains anthocyanins and other polyphenolic compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

There is some human research showing that hibiscus consumption can increase measures of antioxidant capacity.

But again, I don’t want to turn this into another “antioxidant superfood” story.

Your body already has an antioxidant system, and eating a variety of plant foods provides a wide range of beneficial compounds.

I’d look at hibiscus as one small piece of a much bigger picture.

If you’re eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds—as appropriate for your individual CKD needs—you are already getting a tremendous variety of beneficial plant compounds.

Hibiscus tea can simply be another way to add some variety.

What about potassium?

This is a question I hear frequently from people with CKD:

“Can I drink hibiscus tea if I have kidney disease?”

Having CKD does not automatically mean that you need to avoid hibiscus tea because of potassium.

Potassium needs to be individualized.

Some people with CKD have normal potassium levels and have no reason to restrict potassium-rich foods. Others may need to limit potassium because of elevated blood potassium or other factors.

And there’s an important difference between drinking a cup of hibiscus tea and consuming concentrated hibiscus extracts or large quantities of the plant.

If your potassium level is elevated or you’ve been specifically instructed to follow a potassium restriction, it’s worth discussing herbal teas with your healthcare professional rather than assuming they’re all safe—or all unsafe.

What about the “diuretic” effect?

Hibiscus has also been studied for possible diuretic and natriuretic effects.

In other words, it may influence urine production and sodium excretion.

But please don’t interpret this as meaning that hibiscus tea “flushes your kidneys.”

Your kidneys are already doing an incredible job of regulating fluid and eliminating waste products.

And if you have CKD, more urine is not necessarily better.

In fact, if you’ve been prescribed a fluid restriction because of heart failure, edema, advanced kidney disease, or another medical condition, the tea you drink still counts toward your daily fluid intake.

Is hibiscus tea safe with medications?

This is another area where I want people with CKD to be thoughtful.

Because hibiscus may lower blood pressure, it could potentially have an additive effect when combined with blood-pressure-lowering medications.

That doesn’t mean you can’t drink hibiscus tea if you take medication for hypertension.

It means you shouldn’t assume that because something is “natural,” it can’t affect your medications.

If you take blood-pressure medication—or several medications for CKD—talk with your physician or pharmacist before making concentrated hibiscus products or large amounts of hibiscus tea a regular part of your routine.

And I would make an important distinction between tea and supplements.

A cup of brewed hibiscus tea isn’t necessarily equivalent to a concentrated hibiscus extract or capsule.

Herbal supplements can contain much higher and more variable amounts of active compounds.

How I would drink hibiscus tea

If you enjoy the flavor, my favorite way to use hibiscus is pretty simple:

Drink it unsweetened.

You can drink it hot or pour it over ice.

If the tart flavor is too strong, try adding a little lemon, lime, fresh berries, mint, or another flavor you enjoy.

I wouldn’t turn it into a sugary beverage.

One of the easiest ways to take a potentially beneficial beverage and turn it into something much less helpful is to add several teaspoons of sugar—or buy a commercially prepared hibiscus drink loaded with added sugar.

And remember: if you have a fluid restriction, hibiscus tea needs to fit within your prescribed fluid allowance.

So, should you drink hibiscus tea if you have CKD?

Maybe.

But I wouldn’t drink it because you think it’s going to “heal” your kidneys.

I’d drink it because it’s a flavorful, naturally caffeine-free beverage that may have some modest benefits for blood pressure and provides beneficial plant compounds.

And I think that’s a much more useful way to think about food and kidney health in general.

You don’t need a miracle food.

You need to consistently make choices that support the things that matter most for your particular kidney condition.

That might mean keeping sodium under control.

It might mean eating an appropriate amount of protein.

It might mean improving blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol.

It might mean eating more whole plant foods.

It might mean avoiding unnecessary phosphate additives.

And sometimes, it might simply mean replacing a sugary drink with something like unsweetened hibiscus tea.

Those small decisions can add up.

The bottom line

Hibiscus tea is promising—but it’s not a kidney treatment.

The strongest human evidence is for a modest blood-pressure-lowering effect, which is particularly relevant for people with CKD.

There isn’t currently enough evidence to say that hibiscus tea improves eGFR or prevents CKD progression.

For many people with CKD, an unsweetened cup of hibiscus tea can be a perfectly reasonable beverage choice. But your individual potassium level, fluid needs, medications, and overall health still matter.

And that’s really the point.

Kidney health isn’t about finding one perfect food or drink. It’s about understanding which levers matter most for YOU and learning how to use them consistently.

That’s where personalized nutrition can make a difference.
